Muharram Diary (Significant Days in History)
Oct 17, 2015
First of Muharram: The beginning of the Islamic lunar year. Although the migration took place in the month of Rabi' al-Awwal, it is appropriate for all believers to remember the great event of the migration and its important effects on the history of Islam and the sacrifices of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (peace be upon him), on the Night of the Bed. Second of Muharram: The day of the arrival of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and his companions to the land of Karbala (in the year 61 AH)(1), which is the beginning of the great epic of Ashura. Seventh of Muharram: The day of preventing the Husseini (peace be upon him) family from accessing water; on this day, an order from Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad was received by Umar ibn Sa'd to create a barrier between Hussein (peace be upon him) and his companions and the water, so that they would not drink a drop of the Euphrates water!(2) Ninth of Muharram (Tasu'a): «Sheikh Kulayni» narrates from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) that he said: «The day of Tasu'a is the day when Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and his companions were besieged in Karbala, and the enemies gathered to fight him, and the son of Marjana and Umar ibn Sa'd were happy with the large number of their army, and they considered Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and his companions weak on that day, and they were sure that no helper would come to Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and the people of Iraq would not help him; then he said: «May my father be sacrificed for the weak and the stranger;».(3) On this day, Shimr entered Karbala with a letter from Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad addressed to Umar ibn Sa'd, stating: Be harsh on Hussein (peace be upon him) and his companions! Until they surrender and are forced to pledge allegiance, and if they refuse, kill them all. Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) refused to accept the humiliation of pledging allegiance to the enemy; but he asked them to give him respite that night, so that he could worship, pray, and perform the prayer, and the next day he would face them in the battlefield.(4) Tenth of Muharram (Ashura): The day of epic and unforgettable in the history of Islam and Shia; the day of sacrifice, martyrdom and the martyrdom of the master and leader of the martyrs, Hazrat Aba Abdillah al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and his loyal companions, in the land of Karbala (in the year 61 AH). Twelfth of Muharram: The day of the martyrdom of Imam Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) (according to a narration in the year 94 or 95 AH).(5) Twenty-fifth of Muharram: The day of the martyrdom of Imam Zayn al-Abidin (peace be upon him) according to another narration.(6) 1.
